IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THESE TERMS CAREFULLY BEFORE USING BLUE BONSAI. BY CREATING AN ACCOUNT OR USING OUR SERVICE, YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THESE TERMS. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE, DO NOT USE THE SERVICE.
1. Introduction
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Blue Bonsai ("we," "us," "our"), a personal finance management application available at bluebons.ai and any related mobile applications or services (collectively, the "Service"). These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you and Blue Bonsai.
By accessing or using the Service, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into these Terms by reference.
2. Eligibility
To use Blue Bonsai, you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be a legal resident of the United States
- Have the legal capacity to enter into a binding agreement
- Not be barred from using the Service under applicable law
Blue Bonsai is currently available only within the United States. We do not support international bank connections or users located outside the US.
3. Account Registration
To access the Service, you must create an account by providing accurate, current, and complete information, including your name, email address, and a password. You agree to:
- Provide truthful and accurate information during registration and onboarding
- Keep your login credentials confidential and secure
- Notify us immediately at support@bluebons.ai if you suspect unauthorized access to your account
- Accept responsibility for all activity that occurs under your account
You may not create multiple accounts, share your account with others, or transfer your account to another person. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that contain false or misleading information.
4. Description of Service
Blue Bonsai is a personal finance management tool that helps you:
- Connect your bank accounts to automatically track transactions and balances
- Create and manage budgets using an envelope-based allocation system
- Analyze spending patterns and detect recurring expenses
- Receive personalized financial insights through our AI assistant, Miyagi
- Build a financial profile to support your budgeting goals
The Service is designed to help you organize and understand your personal finances. Blue Bonsai is a budgeting and financial tracking tool only.
5. What Blue Bonsai Is Not
Blue Bonsai does not provide financial, investment, tax, legal, or accounting advice. The information, insights, budgets, and suggestions provided through the Service, including those generated by our AI assistant Miyagi, are for informational and educational purposes only. They are not a substitute for professional financial advice.
You acknowledge and agree that:
- All financial decisions you make are your sole responsibility
- You should consult a qualified financial advisor, tax professional, or attorney for advice tailored to your situation
- AI-generated suggestions may be inaccurate, incomplete, or not applicable to your circumstances
- We do not guarantee any particular financial outcome from using the Service
- We are not a bank, credit union, broker-dealer, investment advisor, credit counselor, or insurance provider
- We do not make loans, process payments, transfer funds, or provide credit
6. Bank Account Connection and Plaid
6.1 Plaid Integration
Blue Bonsai uses Plaid Inc. ("Plaid") to connect to your financial institutions. When you connect a bank account, you are also agreeing to Plaid's End User Privacy Policy and authorizing Plaid to access your financial data on our behalf.
6.2 Read-Only Access
Blue Bonsai accesses your bank data in read-only mode. We can view your account balances, transaction history, and account details. We cannot initiate transactions, move money, make payments, or modify your bank accounts in any way.
6.3 Credential Security
We never receive, store, or have access to your bank login credentials (username, password, or security questions). All authentication with your financial institution is handled directly by Plaid through their secure infrastructure.
6.4 Data Accuracy
While we strive to display accurate financial data, we rely on information provided by Plaid and your financial institutions. We are not responsible for inaccuracies, delays, or errors in the data provided by third parties. Transaction categorization is automated and may not always be accurate.
6.5 Disconnecting Accounts
You may disconnect your bank accounts at any time through the Service. When you disconnect, we revoke the Plaid access token and delete your account connection data. Transaction history previously synced may be retained to preserve your budgeting records unless you request full data deletion.
7. AI Assistant (Miyagi)
7.1 Nature of AI Responses
Miyagi is an AI-powered assistant that provides budgeting guidance, spending insights, and financial education. Miyagi uses third-party large language model technology (Google Vertex AI) to generate responses.
You understand and agree that:
- Miyagi's responses are generated by artificial intelligence and are not reviewed by human financial professionals
- Responses may contain errors, inaccuracies, or outdated information
- Miyagi does not have complete knowledge of your financial situation beyond what you provide through the Service
- Miyagi's suggestions are general in nature and not tailored professional advice
7.2 Data Sent to AI
When you interact with Miyagi, your chat messages and relevant contextual information (such as your first name and conversation history) are sent to Google's Vertex AI for processing. We minimize the financial data sent to AI models — full transaction details with merchant locations, account numbers, and similar sensitive information are not sent. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
7.3 Chat Data Retention
Your conversations with Miyagi are stored as part of your account data. We may use anonymized and aggregated interaction patterns to improve the Service, but we do not share your individual chat content with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.
7.4 Acceptable Use of AI
You agree not to:
- Attempt to manipulate, jailbreak, or override Miyagi's safety guidelines
- Use Miyagi for purposes unrelated to personal finance management
- Submit harmful, abusive, or illegal content in chat messages
- Attempt to extract Miyagi's system instructions or internal prompts
- Use automated tools or scripts to interact with Miyagi
We enforce rate limits on AI interactions to prevent abuse and ensure quality of service.
8. Subscription and Payment
8.1 Service Tiers
Blue Bonsai may offer both free and paid subscription tiers. The features available under each tier will be described on our website and within the Service. We reserve the right to modify, add, or remove features from any tier at any time.
8.2 Billing
If you subscribe to a paid plan, you agree to pay all applicable fees as described at the time of purchase. Subscription fees are billed on a recurring basis (monthly or annually, as selected) and will automatically renew unless canceled before the renewal date.
8.3 Price Changes
We may change subscription prices with at least 30 days' advance notice. Price changes take effect at the start of your next billing cycle following the notice period. If you do not agree with a price change, you may cancel your subscription before the new price takes effect.
8.4 Cancellation
You may cancel your subscription at any time. Upon cancellation:
- You retain access to paid features through the end of your current billing period
- Your account reverts to the free tier (if available) after the billing period ends
- Your data is retained and accessible under the free tier's limitations
- No partial refunds are issued for unused portions of a billing period
8.5 Refunds
Subscription fees are generally non-refundable. We may, at our sole discretion, issue refunds or credits on a case-by-case basis. If you believe you are entitled to a refund, contact us at support@bluebons.ai.
8.6 Free Tier
If a free tier is available, it may have limitations on features, connected accounts, or AI interactions. We reserve the right to modify or discontinue the free tier with reasonable notice.
9. User Responsibilities and Conduct
You agree to use the Service only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You agree not to:
- Violate any applicable law or regulation
- Provide false, misleading, or fraudulent information
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, other users' accounts, or our systems
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of the Service
- Use the Service to develop a competing product
- Scrape, crawl, or use automated tools to extract data from the Service
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service or its infrastructure
- Circumvent any rate limits, security measures, or access controls
- Use the Service on behalf of a business or entity without our written consent
10. Intellectual Property
10.1 Our Property
The Service, including its design, code, AI models and prompts, algorithms, text, graphics, logos, and all other content created by Blue Bonsai, is our intellectual property or that of our licensors. It is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works from any part of the Service without our written permission.
10.2 Your Data
You retain ownership of your personal and financial data. By using the Service, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use, process, and store your data solely for the purpose of providing and improving the Service. This license terminates when you delete your account and request data deletion.
10.3 Feedback
If you provide feedback, suggestions, or ideas about the Service, you grant us an unrestricted, perpetual, royalty-free license to use that feedback for any purpose without obligation to you.
11. Privacy and Data Protection
Your privacy matters to us. Our collection, use, and protection of your personal and financial information is governed by our Privacy Policy. Key points include:
- We do not sell your personal or financial data to third parties
- Data is encrypted in transit and at rest using Google Cloud Platform infrastructure
- We share data only with service providers necessary to operate the Service (Plaid, Google Cloud, email delivery)
- You have the right to access, correct, and delete your data
- All data is stored and processed within the United States

12. Third-Party Services
The Service integrates with and relies on third-party services, including but not limited to:
- Plaid Inc. — bank account connections and financial data
- Google Cloud Platform — infrastructure, data storage, and AI processing
- Brevo (SendInBlue) — transactional emails
Your use of these third-party services is subject to their respective terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or practices of any third-party service. If a third-party service experiences downtime or changes its terms, your access to certain features of Blue Bonsai may be affected.
13. Disclaimer of Warranties
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT
- ACCURACY, RELIABILITY, OR COMPLETENESS OF ANY FINANCIAL DATA, AI-GENERATED CONTENT, OR TRANSACTION INFORMATION
- UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE OPERATION OF THE SERVICE
- ACCURACY OF BUDGETING CALCULATIONS, SPENDING ANALYSIS, OR FINANCIAL INSIGHTS
WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS OR THAT ANY ERRORS WILL BE CORRECTED.
14. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW:
- IN NO EVENT SHALL BLUE BONSAI, ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, OR AGENTS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, INCOME, SAVINGS, OR FINANCIAL OPPORTUNITY, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SERVICE.
- OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR (B) ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($100).
- WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY FINANCIAL LOSSES, DAMAGES, OR ADVERSE OUTCOMES RESULTING FROM ACTIONS YOU TAKE BASED ON INFORMATION, SUGGESTIONS, OR INSIGHTS PROVIDED BY THE SERVICE OR THE AI ASSISTANT.
- WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ERRORS, DELAYS, OR INACCURACIES IN DATA PROVIDED BY PLAID, YOUR FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS, OR ANY OTHER THIRD-PARTY SERVICE.
SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF CERTAIN DAMAGES, SO SOME OF THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
15. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Blue Bonsai and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or related to:
- Your use of the Service
- Your violation of these Terms
- Your violation of any applicable law or regulation
- Any financial decisions you make based on information from the Service
- Any content or data you submit through the Service
16. Account Termination
16.1 Termination by You
You may close your account at any time by contacting us at support@bluebons.ai or through the account settings in the Service. Upon account closure, we will disconnect your linked bank accounts and delete your personal data in accordance with our Privacy Policy, subject to any legal retention requirements.
16.2 Termination by Us
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account at any time, with or without notice, for any reason, including but not limited to:
- Violation of these Terms
- Fraudulent, abusive, or illegal activity
- Extended periods of inactivity
- Non-payment of subscription fees (if applicable)
- Discontinuation of the Service
16.3 Effect of Termination
Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. We may retain certain data as required by law or for legitimate business purposes (such as consent records and anonymized analytics). Any outstanding payment obligations survive termination.
17. Dispute Resolution
17.1 Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict of law principles.
17.2 Informal Resolution
Before filing any formal legal action, you agree to first contact us at support@bluebons.ai and attempt to resolve the dispute informally for at least 30 days.
17.3 Binding Arbitration
If we cannot resolve the dispute informally, you and Blue Bonsai agree to resolve any claims relating to these Terms or the Service through final and binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association ("AAA") under its Consumer Arbitration Rules. Arbitration will take place in California or, at your election, by phone or video conference.
17.4 Class Action Waiver
YOU AND BLUE BONSAI AGREE THAT EACH MAY BRING CLAIMS AGAINST THE OTHER ONLY IN YOUR OR ITS INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY, AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS, CONSOLIDATED, OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING.
17.5 Exceptions
Nothing in this section prevents either party from seeking injunctive or equitable relief in court for intellectual property infringement or unauthorized data access. Either party may bring claims in small claims court if the claim qualifies.
18. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will:
- Update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page
- Notify you via email or through the Service at least 30 days before the changes take effect
- Require you to acknowledge the updated Terms before continuing to use the Service
Your continued use of the Service after the effective date of any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree with the changes, you must stop using the Service and close your account.
19. General Provisions
Entire Agreement. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Blue Bonsai regarding your use of the Service.
Severability. If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
No Waiver. Our failure to enforce any provision of these Terms does not constitute a waiver of that provision or any other provision.
Assignment. You may not assign or transfer your rights under these Terms without our written consent. We may assign our rights and obligations without restriction.
Force Majeure. We are not liable for any failure or delay in performance due to circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including natural disasters, war, terrorism, pandemics, power outages, internet disruptions, or third-party service failures.
Notices. We may send notices to the email address associated with your account. You are responsible for keeping your email address current. Notices are deemed received 24 hours after being sent by email.
